An ode to Brittany
To its temperament, its exceptional products, its unique connection to the sea. Armateurs is a company that creates spirits differently—with travel, wind, and time. A company that champions a free and demanding vision of French taste.
A story of enthusiasts
Mathurin is from Saint-Malo. And that changes everything.
Born in Saint-Malo, he grew up surrounded by bottles in his mother's wine cellar and his father's kitchen, who was a sommelier and passionate cook. From an early age, he developed a keen sense of taste, a deep respect for well-made products, and a desire to tell stories through flavors.
In 2020, he launched Les Armateurs.
Around him, a team of enthusiasts has gathered: artisans of taste, lovers of detail, all committed to reviving the great rum routes, blending tradition and modernity, and promoting the terroirs of Brittany and overseas territories.
A family affair.
Accompanied by his father, a sommelier for over 40 years, who passed on to him a love of taste and high standards for well-made products, Mathurin also inherited from his mother, a wine merchant, a curiosity for fine wines and a sense of connection with customers.
At Armateurs, this family passion has grown: today, it is a whole team working together—artisans, communicators, salespeople, logisticians—a family at heart, united by the same mission: to bring the spirit of Saint-Malo to life in every bottle.
The history of Saint-Malo
Since the great days of privateering, rum has crossed the oceans to find its home in Saint-Malo.
A city of sailors and merchants, Saint-Malo has always had strong ties to the rum trade from the Caribbean. Les Armateurs de Rhum continues this 19th-century tradition, selecting exceptional distillates and aging them in an ocean cellar in Saint-Malo or submerging them under the sea to enhance their aromas.
Each vintage tells a story of a journey. Each bottle, a memory.
The Breton character is that elegant, joyful, salty touch of defiance—the art of sharing a good moment.
Rooted in Brittany, proud of our region.
Working with our environment means working with our seaweed, our buckwheat, and our sea. It means promoting local expertise while remaining curious about the world.
The Breton character is also that touch of audacity that led to the creation of SMS, a French and natural alternative to spritz.
The art of distillation, blending, and aging
At Les Armateurs, each spirit is born from a dialogue between terroirs, expertise, and intuition. Whether it's rum from the French West Indies, gin with seaweed, or buckwheat vodka, each recipe reflects a commitment to craftsmanship.
We select distillates with character, which we refine or blend with care, as one would compose a musical score.
In Saint-Malo, our rums age facing the sea, sometimes even submerged 15 meters deep, while our gins and vodkas express all the richness of the Breton terroir. Between technical mastery and marine inspiration, each cuvée bears the signature of our house: exceptional spirits, free, precise, rooted.
